Jasper in a Day! {July 26, 2016}

Last summer we did not go on a long holiday, as we normally due, to prior obligations. Instead we had more of a ‘stay-cation’ and went on different day trips throughout the week.

One of our day trips was to go out to Jasper as I had not been since I was a small girl. Since we live in Calgary this trip involved detailed planning and of course waking up at 5 am (those who know me know I HATE getting up early, but it was necessary in order to go).

Our first stop was the Columbia Icefields and the Glacier Skywalk. It was a bit pricey, but totally worth the experience. We got there right when it opened, which was a good idea because by the time we returned the line to go wrapped around throughout the whole building!

The tour involves riding on an “all-terrain Ice Explorer” and then once you get out to the glacier there is the opportunity to get out and walk around (dress warm because it’s cold out on the glacier!). The driver gives a little talk about the area and points out some areas of interest.

The ticket you purchase also includes the Glacier Skywalk which involves walking off of the cliff on a glass platform (not for the faint of heart!). On the Glacier Adventures Athabasca Glacier Tours website they describe it best,

“Experience waterfalls, wildlife, fossils and more on this exciting 1-kilometre cliff-edged walkway that leads to a platform where glass is all that separates you from a 918-foot drop”.

After that tour we continued the drive to Jasper. We stopped at Tangled Falls on the way as it’s just down the road. Then we got to the town and ate lunch. After lunch we explored some of the stores and head over to Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls (you know me and waterfalls!).

Of course there was many more places we would have loved to stop, but overall it was worth getting up at 5 am.
